What's a trail name?

Trail names are a cherished tradition in the long-distance hiking community. On trails like the Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, and Continental Divide Trail, hikers shed their real names and adopt a trail name given by fellow hikers — often based on a personality quirk, a memorable mishap, or a hiking habit.
